TDY to the Washington, DC Area

King Street Metro Station, Old Town Alexandria, VA

Many US government civilians and military service members will find themselves on temporary duty (TDY) to the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.  Washington, DC can be a confusing and an overwhelming place to the uninitiated.  This page is a guide with information on what to do, how to get around, and where to eat while you are TDY.

Expensive Hotels
Your first challenge is finding a hotel room at a convenient location below the maximum government lodging rate.  Check the Per Diem Rates (official website) and find out what the max lodging rate is for where you are staying - note: rates may be different if you are staying in DC, Virginia, or Maryland.  If you know when you are coming TDY, make your hotel reservations well-ahead of time -- area hotels book quickly, especially around holidays or special events -- you don't want to be stuck out at Dulles Airport when you have a meeting at the Pentagon.

Getting Around
Your next challenge is finding your way around the busy beltway and one-way streets of DC.  The Metro is the easiest way to travel - if your hotel and your place of business are both located near a Metro stop.  conveniently, there are stops near the Pentagon, Foggy Bottom DC, and Crystal City - all prominent TDY locations.

Check out the official Washington Metro website for maps, fares, and schedules of the Metro bus and Metro rail system.  Check out this Metro Rail map overlaid with googlemaps showing the routes as well as local attractions.

If you must drive around the Beltway or other congested DC thoroughfares, make sure you check out the Googlemaps Traffic View that depicts traffic in green, yellow, and red.

SuperShuttle airport shuttle bus is the most convenient and economical way to get to the DC Area airports - Reagan National, Dulles, and even BWI.  Prices range depending on your location and destination -- $32 from Alexandria to Dulles, $45 from Alexandria to BWI.  Check them out online at www.supershuttle.com or call 1-800-258-3826.

Dining
You likely will not find a more diverse, yet very affordable dining selection than in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area.  Check out our Washington DC Restaurants Guide for details, reviews, and maps.

TDY Pay
If you are driving your POV, don't forget to get "In and Around Mileage" annotated on your travel orders - and then don't forget to keep track of your "official business" mileage so that you can claim it when you file your voucher.

Remember, for OCNUS TDY, you are authorized up to $1.50 per day for dry cleaning / laundering expenses - but, you must show all receipts for reimbursement.
