Dim Sum Cuisine Guide

Typical Dim Sum spread

You are missing out on life's delicacies if you haven't spent a late morning in your favorite Cantonese restaurant, sipping warm tea and feasting on the innumerable assortment of delicacies that make up Chinese dim sum. Literally meaning "to touch your heart," dim sum consists of a variety of hand-made dumplings, steamed dishes and other flavorful goodies. They are similar to small plates of intricately prepared hot and cold hors d'oeuvres.

Fortune Chinese Seafood Restaurant
#6249 Arlington Blvd, Seven Corners Center,
Falls Church VA 22044, (703) 538-3335

This is the absolute best Dim Sum restaurant in the greater Washington DC / Northern Virginia area.  We were really impressed by their vast selection of dim sum - not just the mainstream dishes, but some very rare Cantonese delicacies too.  And this is one of the few restaurants in the area that offers the dim sum push-carts -- that is wheeled food serving carts loaded with the steamed dishes on small plates, pushed throughout the restaurant by the wait staff -- all you need to do is stop them as they pass your table and point to the dishes that you want.

Here are just a few of the dim sum dishes we recommend:

  • Roast Duck, Cantonese Style
  • Roast Pork, Cantonese Style (Xa Xiu)
  • Steamed Shrimp Dumpling
  • Steamed Pork Dumpling
  • Pan Fried Shrimp & Pork Dumpling
  • Steamed Shrimp & Pork Dumpling
  • Steamed Shrimp Balls
  • Roasted Pork Rice Noodle Crepe
  • Shrimp Rice Noodle Crepe
  • Baby Clams with Black Bean Sauce
  • Beef with Chow Fun Noodles
Steamed dishes are prepared in small metal steamers   Shrimp and Pork Dumplings, Beef Chow Fun, Pan Fried Dumpling, and Roast Duck

When you ask for a plate, they fill out your dim sum card and charge you per plate   The famous dim sum push-carts loaded with food
