Foggy Bottom - GWU The Kennedy Center is the premier venue for performing arts in Washington, DC. From award-winning symphonies to sensational operas, to musical plays and international shows, you can watch it all in grand splendor at the Kennedy Center. The Kennedy Center is open daily for a self-guided tour or even a free guided-tour (provided by Center staff). Although you cannot enter any of the theaters themselves, you can take the elevator upstairs, walk around the outside terrace deck and enjoy spectacular views of the monuments, Georgetown, Roosevelt Island, and Rosslyn Virginia. The Kennedy Center also offers a variety of kid-friendly events at the Kennedy Center including children's book shows, kid-themed plays, and children's concerts. The Kennedy Center is located adjacent the politically-famous Watergate Apartments on the banks of the Potomac River (view map). Opened to the public in September 1971, its history dates back to President John F. Kennedy who was a lifelong supporter and advocate of the arts, and frequently steered the public discourse toward what he called "our contribution to the human spirit." Kennedy took the lead in raising funds for the new National Cultural Center, holding special White House luncheons and receptions, appointing his wife Jacqueline and Mrs. Eisenhower as honorary co-chairwomen, and in other ways placing the prestige of his office firmly behind the endeavor.
