Georgetown, Washington DC

Intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Ave
Visit Historic Georgetown
Georgetown
is an historic, upscale neighborhood located in northwest DC, on the
banks of the Potomac River (view
map). Home to the campus of Georgetown
University and several foreign embassies, the main attraction today
is the commercial district along two
streets
- M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. A posh mix of boutiques and
chic stores intermixed with international restaurants, Georgetown
has a foreign-feel to it. At night, the streets are gridlocked
with evening-goers traffic and the streets are a blur of bar
frequenters and nightclub visitors. The buildings lining M
Street are a mix of older brick and pastel colors along with
traditional DC columned architecture. The historic C&O Canal
runs right through Georgetown and is a popular tourist attraction,
offering over 180 miles of biking and hiking trails (official
website). Georgetown offers a mix of
hotels - from the luxurious, to the family-friendly.
Parking
can be a challenge in Georgetown - often we have circled the
neighborhood looking for the elusive curb-side parking spot.
At times there can be street-side parking south along the waterfront
underneath the elevated freeway. Your sure bet is to simply
park in one
of the many underground parking garages - one is
conveniently located at the intersection of M and Wisconsin, with
the prices here lower than most other garages.
In
recent years, Georgetown has cleaned up its establishments. In
the past, the streets were lined with many a seedy tavern and
run-down water hole. Today's Georgetown exudes a more
sophisticated image with more polished street-side presence.
There are still a slew of bars and clubs to frolic through at night
- but they are more upscale than years past. Now, there seems
to be a more classy and even slightly eclectic feel to it.
With a rise in the numbers of boutiques and sidewalk cafes, there is
much more to Georgetown than just a place to drink and be merry (but
that it is still a fun place to do that too!)
We found an interesting restaurant / gourmet grocery combination
right on M Street - Dolce & Deluca is an upscale establishment with
fine foods and wine, a large fresh produce section, all arranged in
a sophisticated urban theme. We picked up some sort of an
organic fruit juice blend ($3.50) and enjoyed it as we strolled down
M Street.
You
should make some time to visit the storied campus of Georgetown
University (official website). The nation's oldest Catholic and Jesuit university
is inspired by traditional architecture. The twin spires of
Healy Hall dominates the Georgetown skyline and
can be seen for
miles around. The South Gatehouse
borders 37th St NW DC and brings you into the large central
courtyard with Healy Hall in front of you and White-Gravenor Hall
across the way.

convenient bus service from the closest Metro stations. Every
