Chinatown, Washington DC is not your typical big-city Chinatown.
In fact, there are only about two city blocks of Chinese restaurants
and stores. The large oriental Friendship Arch adorning the street
seems a bit out of place for such a diminutive Asian neighborhood.
This Chinatown
neighborhood is a bustling commercial district,
part of the DC neighborhood known as Downtown. This
entertainment center of town is home
to the multi-purpose arena, the Verizon Center, and a dining and
shopping hub. At night, the signs and streets are brightly lit
kind of like a mini-Times Square sprinkled with
a dozen-or-so Chinese restaurants.
Conveniently, there is a Metro stop right there: Gallery Place /
Chinatown Station. Nearby attractions include the Verizon
Center, Washington Convention Center, Bar Louie, International Spy Museum,
National Building Museum, Gordon-Biersch
Brew-Pub, and the many shops on 7th street. There are many
tourist-trap restaurants that are less-than-authentic.
Our
favorite "authentic" Chinese restaurant in Chinatown is Chinatown Express. Despite the cliché name, this is an authentic Chinese restaurant
located in the touristy DC Chinatown. The freshness is
evident by the cooks preparing hand-made dumplings and fresh noodles
right in
the window. Cheap prices, tasty food - dinner for about $12.
Try the Mixed Bar-B-Que dish (not listed on the menu) which consists
of Chinese Bar-B-Que roast duck, roast pork, soyu chicken, and squid
- also try the Beef with Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun noodle dish. Located at the corner of 6th St and H St (view
