Washington DC Architecture

Supreme Court of the United States, DC
Majestic Columns at the US Supreme Court

The architecture of Washington DC has had a storied history - from Pierre L'Enfant's original plan, presented in 1791 through the dedication of the WWII Memorial in 2004.  DC is typified by iconic monuments, enduring memorials, and stately columned government buildings.  While walking around and touring DC, in addition to visiting the museums and attractions, you will find it interesting to also take a look at the historic buildings of Washington.  Some are famous office buildings, others, like the National Archives, you can enter and tour.  Some buildings have storied pasts, all have historic origins.

US Department of Agriculture building   National Museum of the American Indian

National Archives Building   Traditional Archway in China Town

The Old Post Office   Washington National Cathedral

The famous Watergate Apartments, DC   Columned,  ornate face of the Library of Congress

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts   US Department of Commerce (National Aquarium inside)

The Awakening Sculpture The Awakening sculpture, Hains Point, East Potomac Park   The Islamic Center, Washington DC

Take the time to stray from the National Mall and visit the Old Post Office.  The tower is a distinct part of the DC skyline.  From the outside, the facade is impressive with a statue of Ben Franklin positioned in front.  Inside, you can take a tour of the tower or visit the vast food court and shops.

Another truly impressive architectural masterpiece is the National Cathedral.  The ornate towers and the vibrantly colored stained glass windows are impressive.  Keep your eye out for the intricately designed and unique gargoyles at the National Cathedral.

National Building MuseumThere is no better place to admire American architecture than at the National Building Museum (official website).  This is America's premier cultural institution dedicated to exploring and celebrating architecture, design, engineering, construction, and urban planning.  The National Building Museum welcomes visitors from around the world to its exhibitions which offer insight into the history and future of the world we create for ourselves.
